Getting Around in Abuja

For ease and comfort, we recommend hiring a car with a driver for the day—we’ll be happy to assist you with a reliable option.

If you prefer to move around independently, Uber and Bolt are reliable options in Abuja. You can pay with cash or a credit card, which must be saved in the app. Note that many of these cars are older and may not meet personal comfort standards. Fares typically range from ₦2000 to ₦7000, depending on distance.

Abuja is full of new sights, sounds, and expressions – especially if it’s your first visit. Always be cautious when photographing, particularly around official buildings or personnel. Ask permission before taking photos. Most Nigerians are warm and welcoming – many will even want to see the photo you’ve taken!

Cultural Differences

A little preparation goes a long way. Understanding Nigerian customs and social etiquette can help you avoid misunderstandings. Nigeria has three major ethnic groups – Igbo (Southeast), Hausa (North), and Yoruba (Southwest) – and a mix of Christian and Muslim populations.

Nigerians are generally polite and formal when meeting people. When greeting someone, take your time and ask about their health and family – it’s appreciated. While English is widely spoken, you may also hear Pidgin English, which can be harder to understand.

In Case of Theft

As in most major cities, be aware of pickpocketing, especially in crowded areas such as open markets, which we do not recommend visiting alone. If you are confronted, stay calm and comply. Report any incident immediately and contact your embassy or consulate for assistance.
